Orthodontics (A5)

The module introduces the preliminary diagnostic and information required to assess the orthodontic patient. It provides the necessary clinical training to perform a comprehensive orthodontic examination, assemble data from diagnostic records and plan the course of treatment for the patient. The aim of the module is to facilitate the development of independent and creative thinking in combination with problem-solving.

This module promotes a reflective approach to the clinical practice of orthodontics and entails students providing treatment to patients under direct supervision. Taught elements are based around small group learning, didactic lectures, seminars, demonstrations and practical skills training which enforce current concepts on diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients. During these sessions the student is introduced to a variety of removable appliances, their component parts and properties, the indications for their use and the biomechanical principles governing orthodontic tooth movement.

The student is also instructed on the procedures in placement and adjustment of the appliances including the manipulation properties of the orthodontic materials. Students gain an understanding of the scientific basis of orthodontics. Instruction will also be given in the laboratory aspects of orthodontics.
