Dissertation Professional Practice Project (B5)

Research is an important part of the training. Each student is required to complete a research project and defend their thesis as partial fulfillment of the MSc (Clin) in Dental Surgery. Completion of a dissertation that shows critical awareness  of an original research question and present new data that is evaluated critically so that it advances knowledge in the field.

According to their individual interest students have the option to choose from clinical, non-clinical oother projects. Students are encouraged to complete the manuscript for publication in a refereed journal and to present the research findings, conduct table-clinics, etc. at scientific meetings. During this module students will begin work on their individual dissertations applying the literature, research skill and knowledge acquired during their training to an area of interest specific to them and chosen from the previous modules they have completed. This work will be informed by their clinical experience and represents a substantive piece of academic writing.

Students will be allocated their own tutors who will work individually on a one to one basis helping and guiding the student through their thesis. Didactic teaching will cover understanding research and develop critical appraisal skills. Through the development of skills in searching, accessing and analysing information, data and knowledge students will be encouraged to explore all sources of information to drive and enhance their learning (books, academic and professional journals, online resources, etc.).
