Minor Oral Surgery (B3)
This module is designed to give students a basic understanding of dentoalveolar surgery including the process of diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive management of diseases, deformities and malformations of the mouth and jaws and treatment of oral injuries. It covers the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic infections along with laboratory and biopsy techniques. Cysts of the jaws, their diagnosis and treatment and soft tissue and bony tumours of the oral cavity are reviewed. Students will develop an awareness of techniques used in preparing a mouth for prostheses as well as what surgical therapy can offer for soft and hard tissue correction. In addition the student will gain an awareness of modern surgical therapy, recognise surgical problems such as pain management and learn to either initiate appropriate therapy or make an appropriate referral . The surgical phase of dental implantology is also introduced to the student.
