Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) Course

This one year full time attendance course follows the UK dental curriculum and uses modern teaching and assessment methods to prepare students for the ORE. It has been designed specifically for overseas qualified dentists whose primary qualification is from outside the EEA who intend to practice in the UK. The ORE is an exam that must be passed to be eligible to register with the GDC and practice dentistry unsupervised in the UK.

The overseas registration exam (ORE) is a two part assessment which tests the clinical skills and knowledge of dentists prior to registration. The ORE course comprises of five modules. The first module covers those topics required by ORE part 1 (papers a and b) and the last four modules prepare students for the practical assessments of ORE part 2. During the course students will apply to sit ORE parts 1 and 2.

1. Applied Clinical Sciences and Practice (ACSP)

This module covers in detail the topics required for ORE Part 1 papers a and b.

 Assessment: Consists of two computer-based exam papers to be taken at King's College, London.

2. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

This module prepares students for the OSCE which entails a series of ‘stations’ designed to test clinical skills, history-taking and assessment, communication skills (such as an explanation of problems and treatment plans), judgment and decision making, ethics and attitudes and clinical examination. The series of stations may cover aspects of the following:  behavioural sciences, human disease, law, ethics and professionalism, clinical dentistry, restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, preventive dentistry, dental public health, comprehensive oral care, oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology and oral microbiology, dental radiology and imaging. 

Assessment: Will take place at The Royal College of Surgeons, Lincoln's Inn Fields

3. Dental Manikin (DM)

This practical module teaches and develops the operative skills necessary for the preparation and restoration of teeth.

Assessment: Will take place at ​Eastman Dental Institute, Gray's Inn Road.

4. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning (DTP)

This module teaches the clinical skills necessary to make a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan based on evidence and patient needs. Part of the module involves interaction with an actor who will provide an appropriate history (but will not be examined), together with relevant additional information such as photographs, radiographs, study models or results of other special tests.

Assessment: Will take place at ​Eastman Dental Institute, Gray's Inn Road.

5. Medical Emergencies (ME)

During this module students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and manage medical emergencies. On conclusion of this module students will be required to take a structured scenario-based oral and demonstrate single handed basic life support techniques. This will include cardiopulmonary resuscitation using a resuscitation manikin.
