Short Digital Dental Courses

The City of London Dental School runs a number of short  intensive programmes in Digital Dentistry.  Many of the courses offered are component programmes for the Master and may count towards the relevant degree. These short courses are aimed at the general dental practitioner who is seriously considering introducing and expanding their range of digital practice or embarking upon more challenging academic reward to their professional development.

Four day hands on Cad Cam Course

Aims and objectives

  1. CAD/CAM allows for a practical and reliable method of ensuring excellent indirect restorations in many clinical situations.
  2. Learn how to process chair-side restorations seamlessly in a single visit with technology that will amaze your patients.
  3. In this unique course you will learn CAD/CAM scanning and designing techniques while using and comparing Sirona CEREC, Planmeca and Trios Scanners and various Milling machines and 3d printers.
  4. You will understand and learn the nuances of each system and have extensive hands-on experience in the practical application of CAD/CAM technology.

What You Will Learn

Day 1- Scanning and milling systems

  • Get hands-on experience with three of the latest CAD CAM systems: CEREC, Trios and Planmeca.
  • Gain a fundamental understanding of CADCAM technology and its practical applications.
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of each system and consider which is best suited for your practice.
  • Gain an understanding of the various Milling Materials available and their clinical indications.

Workshop excercises

  • Learn how to Scan and Design using a variety of CAD CAM systems and mill porcelain restorations with all dental materials and equipment  provided.
  • Learn how to Mill, Characterize and Glaze crowns to create aesthetic restorations.

Day 2- scanning, designing and milling restorations

  • Discuss available digital impression and CAD/CAM technologies
  • Understand how preparation design affects the fabrication of milled restorations
  • Plan and design CAD/CAM single tooth restorations
  • Understand the materials available for chairside milled restorations
  • Become familiar with workflows to implement CAD/CAM technologies into your practice

Workshop Exercises

  • Take digital impressions of prepared teeth
  • Scan, design and mill an all-ceramic restoration
  • Explore features of current digital systems and software
  • Intra-oral digital impressions  of a single unit inlay and crown
  • Digital design and fabrication of a single unit implant borne restoration.
  • This day will focus on the rationale for utilising intra-oral scanning in implant dentistry. Topics for discussion will include types of scanners, workflows involved in utilizing acquired data and clinical techniques relevant to best utilize the technology. We will discuss and demonstrate single, multiple and full arch reconstructions
  • This will include a hands-on component for participants to become familiarised with scanning software and intra-oral protocols to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Through Software – Considerations in Diagnosis, Treatment Planning and Implementation of Definitive Therapy.

Day 3- Digital Implant dentistry

  • This day will focus on the rationale for utilising intra-oral scanning in implant dentistry. Topics for discussion will include types of scanners, workflows involved in utilizing acquired data and clinical techniques relevant to best utilize the technology. We will discuss and demonstrate single, multiple and full arch reconstructions
  • This will include a hands-on component for participants to become familiarised with scanning software and intra-oral protocols to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Through Software – Considerations in Diagnosis, Treatment Planning and Implementation of Definitive Therapy.

DAY 4- 3D Printing study models, surgical guides and manufacturing clear aligners in house.

  • Fundamentals of Printing – Considerations in Technologies, applications and underlying Techniques for creation of Surgical  guides for implant placement, restorative Guides, virtual wax ups, temporary restorations and clear aligners.
  • This will include a Tell Show Do style tuition on software that enables efficient decision making in all aspects of pre-operative planning, from design of the proposed smile, fabrication of digital models and manufacture of multiple aligners utilising 3d printing technology including all laboratory stages.
  • Topics for discussion include 3D printers to be used in office to create accurate digital models and appliances, workflows involved in utilising planning software to printing software, and clinical techniques relevant to best utilise the technology.
  • This will include a hands-on component for participants to become familiar with 3D printing protocols to get the best outcomes using the most commonly used and available 3D printers.
